The Canopy GUI is at end of life. Canopy installers are no longer publicly downloadable. They will continue to be available to enterprise customers for an extended transitional period. Enthought's preferred tool for installation and management of Enthought Python and packages is the Enthought Deployment Manager. Over the past few weeks I started programming in Python and have been using Enthought Canopy's python environment (using Mac OS X). I'm interested in modeling incompressible Navier-Stokes equation using the python module FEniCS/DOLFIN, but I have been having problems trying to install it. The latest version of Canopy is 2.1 on Mac Informer. It is a perfect match for the Developer Tools category. The app is developed by Enthought, Inc. And its user rating is 3.8 out of 5.
First download a Mac OS installer from the Canopy download page.
All users may download the standard installer, which includes the packages in thecore SciPy software stack.
For access to the subscriber packages in the Canopy repository, Canopy (EPD)subscribers may choose to download a full installer (instead of the standardinstaller). Alternatively, for a smaller download and install, subscribers mayuse the standard installer, and subsequently install any of the additionalsubscriber packages via the Package Manager.
The Mac OSX version of Canopy is distributed as a disk image (.dmg) file. Opening this filedisplays the installation window shown below. Canopy can be installed by dragging the Canopy iconto the Applications folder in the window, to the computer Desktop, or to another folder. If youdrag it to the Applications folder, it will show as “Canopy” along with your other applications.Use of Canopy is covered by the Canopy End User License Agreement described in license.rft on thedisk image and available under the ‘License’ tab of the About Box dialog (see Canopy -> AboutCanopy).
Note: Canopy uses a separate Python environment as described inWhere are all of the Python packages in my User Python Environment?, the Canopy installation location is not whereusers will actually run Canopy User Python; therefore it is not appropriate toplace it on your PATH environment variable. See Environment setup,below.
Environment setup¶
Once Canopy is copied to your system, the last step is to set up your personal Python environment. Double-clicking the Canopy icon launches the GUI, and the UI will guide you through the process.If you receive an “unidentified developer” error message, please seethis Knowledge Base article.
The remainder of this section describes the standard GUI setup process.However note that there are also two other ways to set up your Python environment:
Standard GUI setup:
When Canopy is launched for the first time, it will automatically configureyour Python environment in the default location unless specified otherwise bya command-line option or a preference setting. This step allows each user ona multi-user machine to have his or her own local Python installation.For more information about the environment location,see Where are all of the Python packages in my User Python Environment?.
This setup step typically takes less than two minutes to complete. On Mac OS thePython environment is installed in ~/Library/Enthought/Canopy/edm/envs/User.

After the Python environment is installed, Canopy prompts you to make it thedefault Python environment. For most users (and for all new Python users), thedefault “Yes” response will be the most convenient.
However, if you are currently using another Python distribution (such asEPD) for production work, then we suggest the more conservative response,“No”. This will not affect operation inside the Canopy GUI application, andyou can always set Canopy to be your default Python later, from the CanopyPreferences dialog, as described inthis Knowledge Base article.
Even if you do not make Canopy your default Python environment, a few lines willbe added your
~/.bash_profile or ~/.profile file defining an alias:
where ‘<username>’ is your username. This allows you to activate Canopy’s Pythonfrom a bash terminal session by running
activate_canopy .

At this point Canopy has been set up and is ready to use.
Downloading Python
Before you start, you will need Python on your computer.
Check whether you already have an up to date version of Python installed by entering python in a command line window. If you see a response from a Python interpreter it will include a version number in its initial display. Generally any Python 3.x version will do, as Python makes every attempt to maintain backwards compatibility within major Python versions. Python 2.x and Python 3.x are intentionally not fully compatible. If python starts a Python 2.x interpreter, try entering python3 and see if an up to date version is already installed.
On Windows, try py first - this is the relatively recent Python Launcher, which has a better chance of avoiding some of the path problems that might occur because on Windows programs don't install into any of the small set of common locations that are searched by default. The Python launcher can also let you select any of the various versions you may have installed from a single command.
If you need to install Python, you may as well download the most recent stable version. This is the one with the highest number that isn't marked as an alpha or beta release. Please see the Python downloads page for the most up to date versions of Python. They are available via the yellow download buttons on that page.
Windows
The most stable Windows downloads are available from the Python for Windows page. On Windows you have a choice between 32-bit (labeled x86) and and 64-bit (labeled x86-64) versions, and several flavors of installer for each. The Python core team thinks there should be a default you don't have to stop and think about, so the yellow download button on the main download page gets you the 'x86 executable installer' choice. This is actually a fine choice: you don't need the 64-bit version even if you have 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit Python will work just fine.

Note that the python.org releases only support versions of Windows that are supported by Microsoft (at the time of the release), so no recent release from python.org can be used on WIndows XP.
Mac
See the Python for Mac OS X page. MacOS from 10.2 (Jaguar) to 10.15 (Catalina) includes a system version of Python 2, but it is best not to consider this the Python to use for your programming tasks - install a current Python 3.x version instead. MacOS after 10.15 (Catalina) will not include a default system Python.

For Red Hat, CentOS or Fedora, install the python3 and python3-devel packages.
For Debian or Ubuntu, install the python3.x and python3.x-dev packages.

For Gentoo, install the '=python-3.x*' ebuild (you may have to unmask it first).
